The TSSAA gives high school football teams 10 days of competition in the month of July just like they give the basketball teams in the month of June.
One glaring difference is that football teams are not allowed to put on their pads until official practice begins on July 28th. That limits the type of competition teams can have, basically leaving them to have 7 on 7 scrimmages.
The Warriors will host one of those this Tuesday with four local teams competing. Football fans can get an early glimpse of the Warriors and some of the teams they will be playing against this season. In addition to the Warriors, Warren County, Cumberland County and Cookeville will be in attendance.
Even though it is a competition against other teams, the early look that fans will get at these teams could be misleading. In these types of competition, no linemen are involved. It’s merely a game against the skill position players. No pads, no contact. It’s a lot like a game of two-hand touch, but offenses will get a chance to work on some of their offensive passing sets, while defenses get a chance to work on covering those schemes.
The scrimmage will make use of quarterbacks, running backs and receivers. On defense, it’s purely linebackers and defensive backs.
Scrimmages, tournaments and leagues like this are filling up the calendar for the month of July all across the state of Tennessee. This is the first summer the TSSAA has limited football teams to practicing only in the month of July so teams feel they have a lot of catching up to do. During June, the only thing they could do was lift weights and condition. Now, it’s time to get down to more of the football fundamentals so as to get a jump on things when official practice rolls around.
After hosting the scrimmages on Tuesday, the Warriors will be back in action Friday at Tennessee Tech’s 7 on 7 passing camp.
Tuesday’s scrimmages are slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Warrior Stadium.
